Equipment Problem Right Before a Show: What to Do

Something failed and the show is soon. Here's how to get the fastest help and what you can safely try now.

1. Contact a person

  • Equipment you bought from Stage Gear: call 718-874-2642. Calling is faster than email. Say when your next performance is and what failed.
  • Rental equipment: contact Broadway Media at 1-800-277-0343 or hello@broadwaymedia.com with your rental order number.
  • Outside business hours, leave a voicemail and also email, so your message is waiting when the team is next available. A response time can't be guaranteed.
  • If you have ShowCare for Wireless or Projection, mention it.

2. Safe quick fixes while you wait

  • A mic is silent: swap in your spare mic and pack. Then check batteries, mute switch, the plug and the mixer channel. See Wireless mic has no sound.
  • Mic cutting out: fresh battery, check the plug is locked, check antennas have line of sight. See Dropouts.
  • Projector shows no signal: check the input/source, the laptop's display setting, and try a short cable directly from the laptop. See Projector no signal.
  • Something won't power on: check the outlet and power strip. See Equipment not powering on.

3. Have a backup plan

  • Move a shared or ensemble mic to the lead who lost theirs.
  • Use an area mic or handheld for that scene.
  • Run scenery as a still image or lighting look if video fails.

Don't open equipment, bypass fuses or breakers, or hang a projector without proper rigging, even under time pressure. If you smell burning or see smoke, unplug it and stop using it.
