Planning Equipment for a School Musical
A simple order of operations for teachers and directors planning sound and projection for a musical.
1. Start with the script
- Count the roles that sing or speak alone over music. That's your wireless mic count. See How many wireless mics do you need?
- Note scenes that need projected scenery, video or special effects.
- Mark quick changes, wigs and dance numbers. They affect mic style and placement.
2. Take stock of what you own
Write down the brand and model of your wireless system, how many working transmitters and mics you have, your mixer's number of inputs, and any projector and screen. Model numbers matter. See Choosing the right connector.
3. Fill the gaps: buy, add on or rent
- Need extra channels for one big show? Rent them.
- Need mics for your existing packs? Bodymics, with Cast Pack.
- Starting from scratch? Show-Ready wireless systems and projection systems.
4. Work backward from tech week
| When | What |
|---|---|
| As early as possible | Request quotes; start district/PO approval; reserve rentals for busy spring dates |
| 4–6+ weeks before tech | Order built-to-order systems (Show-Ready: typically 2–4 weeks after order confirmation, plus shipping) |
| 2–3 weeks before tech | Order consumables: mic tape, sweat covers, batteries, belts or pouches |
| Tech week | Set up, test and write the mic plot. See Preparing equipment for tech week |
5. Plan people, not just gear
16 or more mics usually need a dedicated mixer operator following a script marked with every entrance, plus a backstage mic wrangler for changes, batteries and spares.
