Preparing Equipment for Tech Week and Opening Night

Before tech week

  • Inventory every mic, pack, receiver, cable, battery and spare. Label packs and receivers with matching numbers.
  • Charge or buy batteries for every performance plus rehearsals. See Battery best practices.
  • Stock consumables: mic tape, remover wipes, sweat covers, belts or pouches, and windscreens.
  • Write the mic plot: who wears which mic in each scene, and every swap.
  • Test the projector with your actual content and the stage lights on.
  • Rentals: check the delivery date and complete the 24-hour inspection.

First tech rehearsal

  • Coordinate frequencies with all show equipment on. See Setting up multiple wireless microphones.
  • Fit mics on every performer and set gain at full performance volume.
  • Walk the stage to check for dropout spots.
  • Check projector alignment and look for actor shadows.

Opening-night checklist (and every performance)

  • Fresh or fully charged batteries in every pack, plus charged spares.
  • Each mic tested on the performer before the house opens ("mic check").
  • Spare mic and pack tested and ready backstage, with a plan for who swaps it in.
  • Projector on and warmed up; show computer on power with notifications and sleep turned off.
  • Mixer scenes/snapshots saved; channel labels match the mic plot.
  • Phone numbers handy: Stage Gear 718-874-2642; for rentals, Broadway Media 1-800-277-0343.

After each show

Pull batteries, let mics and packs dry, coil cables loosely and note anything that misbehaved. See Caring for body-worn microphones.
